Sorry we could not bring part 2 to you sooner, but it has been a busy week for us here! Caleb and Leah left this Wednesday for home and we got two newbies, Sara and Jesse. Anyways, enjoy!
After seeing the coastline, we made our way back up the hill stopping at the petroglyphs:
These markings are carved in the middle of a lava field that is at least 400 years old. Not as old as we thought…
The circles represent the souls of the carver’s children.
Almost at the top of the hill we stopped at the Thurston Lava Tube:
We also visited the sulphur banks where sulphur crystals form on the surface due to gases rising from a hot chamber deep below:
That night we watched the sunset over Pele’s immense double-crater, and waited for the real show once the dark settles in:
Hawaiians really like SPAM for some reason…
On the drive home we made a few stops. We saw a black sand beach and Alex ate at the Southern most restaurant in the entire USA! We climbed in large trees by an old british port:
